Events & Campaigns
Events
Every year we hold many events in addition to the campaigning we do.
Our events include discussions with Ministers, Policy Forums, film
screenings, and socials to name but a few. There are events that we
get involved with the local Constituency Labour Parties and there
are also national events including political weekends, Labour
Students National Council, Labour Students Conference and the Labour
Party Conference, which often is in Manchester.
Previous Events
In 2008/9 we hosted Eddie Izzard, Andy Burnham MP, Bev Hughes MP and
Ed Miliband MP at various events in Manchester, in addition to this
we also held an event with James Purnell MP and many other MPs and
speakers this year alone. Manchester Labour Students has a history
for holding events with major speakers and will continue to do so.

Discussing Policy
Labour Students is about more than campaigning; it is also about
discussing policy and thinking about the future. That’s why we hold
Policy Forums to discuss ideas and also think hard about motions to
forward to National Labour Students that in turn has influence on
the party itself.
We have as well held events in conjunction with the Manchester
Debating Union where we have had influential speakers such as Tony
Lloyd MP, the MP for Manchester Central & Chair of the Parliamentary
Labour Party.
Campaigns
Campaigning is a huge part of what Manchester Labour Students does,
whether it is within our Students’ Union and NUS or with the Labour
Party in local and national elections.
In Students' Unions
At General Meetings and throughout the year we are working hard to
try to get our Students' Unions to deliver for students on relevant
issues. We have members of Council at UMSU working hard to make our
Union as relevant as possible, as well as done the road at Man Met
where MMUnion President and Labour Student, Rob Boardman, is doing a
great job.
In February and March, Union election season hits us with NUS
delegations and the Union Executive and Councils being decided at
UMSU and MMUnion. Manchester Labour Students work hard in these
elections backing and/or forwarding candidates.
With the Labour Party
We also take part in campaigning in by-elections, local council
elections and in the target marginal seat of Manchester Withington,
where we are working hard to ensure
Lucy Powell is elected their MP
at the next General Election!

We had great success in Manchester during the 2008 Local Elections
holding the ward we campaigned most in, Chorlton, with an increased
majority.
Manchester Labour Students is affiliated to the Manchester Labour
Party and a such is commitment to working for the success of Labour
in Manchester.
